One option for replacing a missing tooth or teeth, is a partial denture, which is also known as a bridge. It is essentially like having a crown or cap on the natural tooth in front of and behind the open space left by the missing tooth. Fake teeth, or also known as pontics, are fabricated connecting the tooth crowns together filling in the empty space. Different types of materials can be used to fabricate fixed partial dentures, including gold, or porcelain fused to metal. This entire piece is then fitted and cemented in place.
Advantages of a Fixed Partial Denture (Bridges)
- Feel and function like natural teeth
- No need to remove from the mouth for cleaning
Disadvantages
- More expensive than removable partial dentures
- Teeth that may not necessarily need crowns are given them to support the bridge
